The Global Times stated that Foxconn plants in southern Guangdong and eastern Jiangsu are under Chinese inspection. On-site inquiries of the Taiwanese company’s land use in central Hunan and Hubei are underway. On Sunday, the media reported that Foxconn Technology Group, the world’s largest electronics contract maker, is under tax and land usage probes at various mainland Chinese sites.

The Global Times said that Chinese authorities are reviewing Foxconn’s factories in southern Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces and investigating the company’s land use in central Hunan and Hubei provinces. The article does not clarify what authorities are investigating or Foxconn’s offenses.

Foxconn’s Compliance with Chinese Authorities and Terry Gou’s Presidential Bid

“Compliance with the law is a basic principle for our group worldwide,” Foxconn said Sunday. The corporation said, “We will actively cooperate with the relevant (authorities) for the operations concerned,” without providing additional information.

Foxconn, formerly Hon Hai Precision Industry, is Apple’s leading iPhone supplier. It is mainland China’s largest private-sector employer, with over a million employees.

Two-and-a-half months before presidential elections in Taiwan, which China claims as its territory and vows to take one day, the inquiry begins.

Billionaire Terry Gou Tai-ming, Foxconn’s founder, left the company to run independently in Taiwan’s January 2024 presidential election.

The 72-year-old did not become the opposition Kuomintang party’s nominee in 2019, and analysts anticipate him to have little chance of winning. Critics say Gou has a cozy relationship with the mainland Chinese authorities, but he thinks he can bring peace to Taipei and Beijing.
